Great Hotels in Berlin

By: Andrei Mocanu

You are really spoiled for choice when you want a good hotel in Berlin. What you choose could be influenced firstly by your budget, and secondly by the location you prefer.

Budget Hotels in Berlin
Budget is at the top of most people's minds at the moment. And there are still some hotels where rooms can be obtained for close to $100 without sacrificing comfort.

Grand City First Class Hotel Mitte. This modern hotel is a clever and careful restoration of some of the older protected buildings in the Prenzlauer Berg area. It has rooms designated Standard or Superior, with prices to match. Whichever price you choose, you will have a comfortable bed, an en-suite, and an internet connection. The hotel has all the usual facilities, including a restaurant, bar, gym and lounge.

Mark Hotel Meineke. Like many Berlin hotels, this started life as a grand residential home, and some of its original features have been incorporated into the hotel design. The grandeur of the entrance hall, with its dark wood paneling, delicate wall paintings and barrel vaulted ceiling, will immediately remind you of this. Although its location is close to the popular Kurfurstendamm boulevard, the hotel is quiet with many rooms facing an enclosed courtyard. Again you can choose between a room categorized Comfort or a larger First-Class one. Family rooms cancater for two adults plus two children, aged 16 or under, at no extra charge. First-class rooms have facilities for making tea and coffee as well as the usual en-suite, and TV. Rooms with internet access are available on request.

Ku'Dammioi Hotel. If you prefer the ultra modern and are happy to stay on the Kurfurstendamm itself, go for the Ku'Damm 101 Hotel, enjoy contemporary comfort and benefit from its 101 well-being menu, aromatic steam bath and spa treatments. Take your breakfast seven floors up, enjoying unsurpassed views over the city

Other hotels in this sort of price range include:
The Best Western Hotel City, a new establishment in the well-known Friedrichschain district.
Derag Hotel Henriette in what is known as the V'Kleines Regierungsviertel", the little government sector.
The Albergo Hotel Berlin, located close to Schdnefeld airport and just twenty minutes from the city center by train.

Top Notch Berlin Hotels
If you are lucky enough to be able to splash out on ultimate luxury and service, you still have a good choice of hotels.

The Brandenburger Hof Hotel. This exclusive, five-star hotel sits close to the Kurfurstendammboulevard. Previously an emperor's palace, it has a Michelin-starred restaurant, a piano bar and wine cellar, a conservatory that is a courtyard with a glass roof, and a Japanese garden.

Hotel Ad Ion Kempinski. After the Second World War, this hotel was rebuilt close to the famous Brandenburg Gate and Unter den Linden. You can't fail to be impressed by its baroque style interior, which includes a fountain decorated with elephants in its lobby, as well as a 24-carat gold frame around its dome of stained glass. It boasts five restaurants serving different types of cuisine, one of which has a coveted Michelin star.

The Alma Schlosshotel im Grunewald. Right at the western edge of Charlottenberg, a peaceful area of parkland is the setting for this chic hotel which has been completely redesigned by the famous Karl Lagerfeld. With its comprehensive spa facilities, this could be the perfect place to relax and recharge, away from the bustle of the city just a short trip away

Grand Hyatt Hotel. If you prefer to be in the thick of things, and like a minimalist style complying with feng shui principles, you'll find the Grand Hyatt in the Potsdamer Platz in the Mitte district.
